Users of our audits, such as the public, rely on our reports to inform them of important audit results. These stakeholders have consistently communicated to us that fraud in government is an important topic they want to know about.
To meet these needs and increase transparency, going forward SAO will report all fraud investigations through a public report that will be published on our website. In the past, smaller losses had been reported to management in a letter rather than in a public report.
Increasing our fraud reporting transparency will raise awareness of government fraud, and might help other state and local governments identify their own internal control weaknesses to help them avoid fraud in their agencies.
