Annual report filing campaign wrap-up: Is your FIT listing accurate?
Jun 1, 2026
As we close out this year’s annual report filing campaign, we want to thank the many local governments that submitted their reports and helped make this reporting season a success.
With the May 30 deadline behind us for governments with fiscal years ending on December 31, our live filing progress infographic, powered by the Financial Intelligence Tool (FIT), a service of the Office of the Washington State Auditor, reflects the statewide status of annual report submissions.
But even after the deadline, there’s one important question to consider:
Is your public-facing FIT listing accurate?
Why accuracy matters
Your annual report data doesn’t just fulfill a compliance requirement–it becomes part of public record. Through FIT, your financial data is:
- Publicly accessible
- Used for comparison across governments
- Viewed by stakeholders, researchers and community members
- Referenced during audits and financial reviews
In short, FIT is your government’s public-facing financial snapshot. Ensuring your report is complete and accurate helps:
- Demonstrate transparency and accountability
- Avoid confusion caused by reporting discrepancies
- Reduce follow-up questions about flags or variances
- Support meaningful statewide financial comparisons
Accuracy protects both your compliance standing and your public credibility.
It’s not too late to submit or update
If you have not yet filed, or if you’ve identified an issue in your submission, there is still time to take action.
Submitting or correcting your report ensures your data is reflected properly in FIT and accurately represents your government’s financial position. Even small corrections can make a meaningful difference in how your data appears in public dashboards and comparisons.
How to make final updates
If you need to:
- Submit a late report
- Resolve flags or variances
- Correct financial statement data
- Update information reflected in FIT
You can take the following steps:
- Review your submission in the online filing system
- Resolve any outstanding flags or validation issues
- Confirm your general ledger agrees with your submitted financial statements
- Resubmit updated information if corrections are required
A final reminder: Your FIT listing is public
FIT allows users to explore and compare financial data across more than 2,200 Washington local governments. That means your data may be viewed in side-by-side comparisons, trend analysis and public reporting tools.
Taking a few final moments to confirm your submission is accurate helps ensure your public-facing FIT listing:
- Reflects complete and correct data
- Aligns with your internal records
- Accurately represents your financial position
